Group Counselling

YOU ARE NOT ALONE

Group Counselling is a form of psychotherapy that involves one or more therapists working with several people at the same time. This type of therapy is widely available at a variety of locations including private therapeutic practices, hospitals, mental health clinics, and community centers. Group therapy aims to alleviate distress through discussing and expressing feelings, help change attitudes, behaviors, and habits that may be unhelpful, and promote more constructive and adaptive ways of coping.

The benefits of group therapy include:

  • Understanding that you’re not alone: The realization that others are dealing with similar emotions and circumstances can be comforting.
  • Facilitating the giving and receiving of support: Providing and receiving support from others can boost your overall health.
  • Giving you a voice: Connecting with fellow group members can help articulate your own feelings as they occur.
  • Providing a sounding board: Receiving feedback on how you come across to others can be enlightening.
  • Propelling you forward: Hearing how other members successfully overcame their fears  can be very encouraging.
  • Promoting social skills: Groups not only help to ease the sense of isolation but also provide an opportunity to practice re-engaging with people.

Group therapy is used to address a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Addiction
  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Depression
  • Eating disorders
  • Generalized anxiety disorder
  • Panic disorder
  • Phobias
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

There are two types of group therapy:

  1. Process Based Groups: The goal of process-based therapy is to help individuals identify and understand the underlying processes that influence their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. These processes might include patterns of thinking, emotional responses, physiological reactions, or behavioral tendencies.
  2. Psychoeducational Groups: These groups focus on educating clients about chosen topics and providing tools and coping strategies.

Group therapy is designed to address specific issues or needs, and the best type for an individual will depend on their unique circumstances and goals.
