The Courage to Heal:
Men’s Mental Health Matters
Men’s mental health is a topic that often gets swept under the rug, hidden behind societal expectations of stoicism and strength. The truth is, men struggle just as much as anyone else with anxiety, depression, and trauma, but they’re often discouraged from speaking up. When a man decides to seek therapy, he’s frequently met with shame and ridicule from those around him. Phrases like “man up” or “toughen up” can be damaging, implying that seeking help is a sign of weakness rather than a sign of courage.
This stigma surrounding men’s mental health is not only unfair, but it’s also deadly. Men are more likely to die by suicide than women, and this is often linked to untreated mental health issues. As a therapist in Calgary, Alberta, I’ve seen the impact that societal expectations can have on men’s mental health. But I’ve also seen the positive impact that therapy can have when men feel safe and supported. When men are given a non-judgmental space to share their thoughts and feelings, they’re able to work through their struggles and develop healthier coping mechanisms.
If you’re a man struggling with your mental health, know that your thoughts matter, and you deserve a safe space to share them. Therapy can be a powerful tool in helping you navigate life’s challenges, and it’s okay to ask for help. Don’t let societal expectations hold you back from seeking the support you need. You are strong, capable, and deserving of care – and there are people who want to support you on your journey towards healing and growth.
