Bringing Neuroaffirming ACT to Our Calgary Practice
As therapists, we believe that the learning never truly stops. To better serve our community, we recently traveled to Montréal to attend a two-day intensive workshop with Dr. Russ Harris as part of his Canadian tour. The focus was one that is incredibly close to our hearts: “Neuroaffirming ACT for ADHD and Autism.”
It was a rich, challenging, and deeply human experience. After two days of clinical learning and experiential exercises, we’ve returned to Alberta with fresh perspectives and concrete tools to support our neurodivergent clients.
What is Neuroaffirming ACT?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a powerful tool for building psychological flexibility. However, when working with autistic individuals or those with ADHD, a “one-size-fits-all” approach simply doesn’t work.
A neuroaffirming approach means moving away from trying to “fix” or “normalize” neurodivergent traits. Instead, it’s about:
Respecting Lived Experience: Validating the unique way each person’s brain processes the world.
Practical Adaptations: Tailoring interventions to account for executive functioning, sensory needs, and task inertia.
Compassionate Support: Addressing the very real impacts of masking, neurodivergent burnout, and rejection sensitivity.
Key Takeaways from the Workshop
The training focused on moving beyond standardized protocols to find a balance between scientific grounding and genuine humanity. Some of the core themes we explored included:
Navigating Executive Functioning: Developing practical strategies for task inertia and emotional regulation.
The Power of Unmasking: Creating a safe therapeutic space where clients feel they can slowly drop the “mask” and embrace their authentic selves.
Self-Compassion & Acceptance: Helping clients move through the shame often associated with being neurodivergent in a neurotypical world.
How This Impacts Our Work with You
What stood out to us most during this conference was the importance of flexibility. Therapy should be accessible, respectful, and, above all, affirming.
By continuing our education with experts like Dr. Harris, we aim to refine our ability to support our ADHD and autistic clients with more than just clinical tools—we want to provide a space where you feel seen, respected, and empowered to live a life that aligns with your unique values.
We are excited to integrate these neuroaffirming principles into our practice here in Calgary and continue growing alongside our clients.
