Trauma Focused Acceptance Commitment Therapy:
Reflections on (TFACT) with Russ Harris
Finding Openness in Trauma-Focused ACT
As therapists, we’re always looking for ways to improve our practice and better support our clients. Recently, we had the opportunity to attend a Trauma Focused Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) conference hosted by the renowned Russ Harris in British Columbia. The workshop was expertly organized by Benjamin Schoendorff, and we must say, it was truly one of the best workshops we’ve ever had the privilege of attending.
What is Trauma-Focused ACT?
Trauma Focused Acceptance Commitment Therapy is an adaptation of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy that specifically addresses the complex needs of individuals who have experienced trauma. This approach acknowledges the impact of trauma on an individual’s life and helps them develop psychological flexibility to cope with traumatic experiences. By focusing on acceptance, values, and action, Trauma-Focused ACT empowers clients to break free from the constraints of their past and move towards a more meaningful life.
A Heart Full of Gratitude
The conference was more than just a learning experience – it was a reminder of the importance of simplicity and authenticity in our work as therapists. Russ Harris’s presentation was infused with wisdom, love, and a deep understanding of the subject matter. His authenticity and passion for Trauma Focused Acceptance Commitment Therapy were palpable, and it was clear that he was sharing from the heart.
One quote that resonated deeply with us was “Perfection is the enemy of happiness.” As people who often strives for more and better, we recognize that this pursuit can sometimes lead us away from what truly matters. Harris’s words were a gentle reminder to prioritize simplicity and focus on what brings fulfillment.
Another phrase that stuck with us was “keep it simple,” which Russ wrote in our book during the conference. This message is a powerful reminder for therapists and clients alike.
A Big Thank You to Benjamin Schoendorff
I’d like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Benjamin Schoendorff for organizing this exceptional workshop. His dedication to bringing together talented speakers and creating a supportive learning environment is truly commendable. Kudos to him for putting together what was undoubtedly one of the most impactful workshops we’ve attended.
