Why Eating Disorders Are Often About More Than Food
How Understanding the Link Between Food and Mental Health Can Lead to Healing
In our practice here in Calgary, we often see how the relationship with food is rarely just about the food itself. Whether it’s the high-pressure environment of our professional lives or the quiet struggles we face at home, eating disorders (EDs) often emerge as a way to navigate an internal storm. As therapists, we see these challenges not as “problems to be fixed,” but as complex signals from the mind and body that something deeper requires our care and attention.
The Mirror of the Mind
An eating disorder—whether it be anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, or orthorexia—is frequently a coping mechanism. It can be a way to exert control when life feels chaotic, a way to numb painful emotions, or a manifestation of deep-seated anxiety and low self-esteem.
The impact on mental health is profound. When the brain is undernourished or stressed by the cycle of binging and purging, it struggles to regulate mood. This often leads to a “feedback loop” where the eating disorder fuels depression and anxiety, and those feelings, in turn, make the disordered behaviors feel even more necessary. Breaking this cycle requires more than just dietary changes; it requires a compassionate look at the emotional roots underneath.
The Impact on Our Relationships
Living with an eating disorder can feel like living with a loud, critical voice in your head that never goes on vacation. This voice often tells you to withdraw from friends, avoid family dinners, or hide your struggles from those who love you most.
In our work as a husband-and-wife team, we are particularly attuned to how these struggles affect the “whole” person—including their relationships. Isolation is a common side effect of disordered eating, but it is also the very thing that keeps the disorder strong. Healing happens in connection. When we begin to open up and share the burden, the “voice” of the disorder starts to lose its power.
Finding a New Rhythm
Recovery is not a linear path, and it certainly doesn’t happen overnight. It involves unlearning years of self-criticism and replacing it with a new rhythm of self-compassion. It means learning to listen to your body’s needs again and recognizing that your worth is entirely independent of a number on a scale or the food on your plate.
In the foothills of Alberta, we are surrounded by a landscape that changes with the seasons—sometimes harsh, sometimes beautiful, but always resilient. Your journey toward mental wellness is much the same. There will be difficult seasons, but with the right support, there is always the possibility of a new, healthier spring.
